New musicians, venues in Henderson County for Cider, Wine & Dine

This is a strange but plentiful weekend for live music in Hendersonville and the surrounding area.
It is strange because I’m seeing some new names – venues and musicians – which is really good. You can never have too many places to see and hear live music, and new venues and musicians means more diversity, which in this day and age is a cultural plus.
It’s plentiful because, well, this is Cider, Wine & Dine Weekend, a tourism event with an extensive agenda of places showcasing what there is to eat and drink in Henderson County.

Many of those places will have live music. And some of the stalwart venues will have music daily/nightly Thursday-Sunday. Thankfully, the weather should be great this weekend with little chance of rain.

Welcome to the pack… Cantina Phoenix has appeared in this column for the past few weeks, and it looks like this Mexican restaurant is dishing out some very authentic south of the border music, as well as some WNC established bands, such as 28 Pages playing Friday night.
But on Saturday night, El Compa Chuy will be performing, and according to a Facebook text message, he is a famous Mexican country music singer. I learn something new every day.
Stone Ashe Vineyard is a new vineyard in Hendersonville and hopefully it will continue to host live music. This Sunday afternoon, 3 Shades of Gray will be rocking the vines.
Welcome back… The legendary Old Home Place is booking again after a pandemic leave of absence. For years, this was THE authentic place to hear bluegrass. Let’s keep The Old Home Place jumping this Saturday evening when Jericho Hill will play country and bluegrass favorites.
Zeke’s Greenside Tavern has had a checkered past of presenting live music, but it made several advance commitments for music yet to come, and this Thursday you can see Carver & Carmody, and on Saturday, catch Carrie Morrison.
A full house… You know a venue is serious about live music when it books gigs for the entire weekend, Thursday through Sunday. For a different live music experience every night or day, the leading venues are Mills River Brewing Co., Oklawaha Brewing Co., Southern Appalachian Brewery.
Mills River will corner the diversity market starting with F.A.T. (more on that in weeks to come), Country Poor, Bull the Barker (psychedelic), Gypsy Swingers (Latin), and Schlender and Dauphinais (bluegrass).
Oklawaha kicks off the weekend with Kid Billy and continues with Ross Osteen Band, Eric Congdon & the Circuit Breakers, and Human Ladder — all classic and well established WNC music makers.
Not to be out done, Southern Appalachian Brewery has a full slate, starting Thursday with Eric Congdon (now where have we heard that name and guitar before?), and following up with Salsa Shark (Afro-Cuban jazz), Howie Johnson Band, and Letters to Abigail.
Something for everyone!
Working a theme… Point Lookout Vineyards will host its annual Celtic Celebration this weekend. For a wee bit of the Irish, Point Lookout will offer Irish singer and comedian Seamus Kennedy on Friday, traditional Irish music by The BorderCollies on Saturday, and an unconventional wrap on Sunday with Piper Jones Band.
I do believe Hendo has had enough of the pandemic and is ready to get back to an over-abundance of live music. Let’s do it, folks!
Live music is a relationship, and we patrons must do our part. But for now, let’s do it with our masks on. Doing it outside is always great, and if we can do it without getting too close to each other, all the better. Let’s not derail a good thing with a virus surge.
